Mosén Sáez House
The Camí Reial de la Vila Joiosa on its way through Sant Joan is called Benimagrell sidewalk. The sidewalks are livestock roads declared public property. They are used by shepherds and ranchers to move the cattle, seeking their food and care. Mosén Sáez House is located in a mythical setting, between the Caputxo estate and the enclave of Quatre Camins. Four roads is the intersection of the sidewalk of Benimagrell and the road of the Campet. The route still crosses cultivated fields, for almost a kilometer we can forget the desolation to which the Camp d’Alacant has been reduced. In addition, the path is surrounded by numerous fences resolved with very imaginative solutions, in wood, stone, plastered cements, nuanced with bougainvillea that delights walkers. Road traffic is usually not very frequent so the ride, accompanied by the singing of birds, is a regenerative experience.
As far as the Mosén Sáez house is concerned, the building has a rectangular plan. It is accessed from a spacious hall, divided into two bays by an arch that separates the house of the settler and the winery. It retains the traditional kitchen with a large bell and the staircase leading to the main floor, where the different bedrooms are located. The main facades have very differentiated treatments. While the elevation that overlooks the sidewalk has hardly any gaps, the front that opens at noon opens with several windows and a balcony on the upper floor. An important pinnacle softens the light on that façade.
The vestibule has remarkable construction elements, such as the pavement formed by river stone edges, the fascia of the Tuscan arch, the front of the staircase or a well with a rim. Other outbuildings to highlight are a warehouse and the winery, a ship with a flat roof where a cup is still preserved inside, that is, the raft where the grapes were stepped on, and the dryer on the outside, of square type paved with ceramic bricks arranged in spike.
The antiquity of the construction and its attractive elements linked to the oenological imaginary, the agrarian fabric that still occupies a large area, together with the beauty of the road, make this stretch of the sidewalk of Benimagrell one of the landmarks of greater scenic interest of Sant Joan d’Alacant.
